As Cayman keeps close watch on the system developing in the south-eastern Caribbean Sea, Cayman Airways has said it is offering a ‘one-time’ change fee and fare difference waiver to passengers on international and domestic flights this weekend.

The national flag carrier, in a statement Thursday, said the change fee and waiver will be open to passengers with existing tickets for travel to/from any CAL destination, including domestic routes.

Its decision follows the potential severe weather notification issued Thursday for the Cayman Islands by the Cayman Islands National Weather Service (CINWS) which said the disturbance is forecast to move over the western Caribbean in the next 5 days.

“The system is likely to become a tropical depression as it moves into an area more favorable to development. Regardless of development of the system, the latest forecast information indicates there is a high potential for this system to impact the Cayman Islands early next week. Scattered thunderstorms, rough seas and gusty winds are likely from late night on Sunday as the disturbance moves over the western Caribbean,” the CINWS said in its Thursday afternoon bulletin.

The Weather Service, however added in its 4pm update that there still remains some “uncertainty as to where the disturbance will move as it gets to the western Caribbean and as such residents are urged to keep abreast of the updates on this system”.

CAL, in its statement, added it that it is monitoring the progression of the active tropical wave as it relates to any potential impacts on the airline’s flight operations early next week.

“No schedule changes for existing flights are anticipated at this time, but may become necessary depending on weather conditions. If it becomes necessary to cancel a flight, the airline will endeavor to operate a recovery flight when it is safe to do so,” the statement said.

It added that in the event of flight cancellations or schedule changes, affected passengers will be contacted directly using the contact details provided at the time of booking.
