Any young Caymanians who had the dream of getting their pilot wings would be familiar with the Zak Quappé Flight Scholarship.
The initiative was set up in 2013 by family and friends of the late Zak Quappé, who was a commercial pilot and enthusiastic and supportive flight instructor, passing on his passion for flying to his students.
The scholarship made it possible for those wishing to follow in Quappé’s footsteps to attend flight school in Florida and gain their initial pilot training.
Over the years it has made many a dream come true, and now the mantle is being passed to other organisations and entities who have subsequently stepped up to continue similar programmes.
It has been decided that the remaining funds in the scholarship account, in the amount of $12,169.89, will be gifted to the consistently dedicated high school group that guides students of Clifton Hunter who are interested in taking the first step to becoming pilots.
In a press release, the ZQFS committee members said, “We wish to thank the former head of that program, Alfred Gordon, and now Chris Harris, for keeping this program at a high standard and who will use the funds to help more students.
“As always, the committee wishes to thank all our generous donors over the years and wish all pilots a long and exciting career in flying.”
