While pageant organisers consider the way forward for reigning Miss Cayman Islands Universe Tiffany Conolly, whose assault trial resumes 5 Dec., second runner-up Hayley Grizzel represented Cayman at the opening of a new Cayman Airways gateway in Los Angeles over the weekend.

In a statement released on the pageant’s social media platform, the Miss Cayman Islands Universe Committee announced that Grizzel was selected to make her first international appearance to help mark the historic inaugural non-stop Cayman Airways flight from Los Angeles International Airport to Grand Cayman.

The decision comes weeks after the committee announced a contingency plan to prepare first runner-up Chloe Powery-Doxey to represent Cayman at the Miss Universe Pageant in New Orleans, Louisiana, in January.

Conolly, 24, of West Bay, has been suspended from making any public appearances for the past three months with no change to that status until the conclusion of her Summary Court assault trial next month.

Conolly is alleged to have beaten up her ex-boyfriend, and his father, in a fit of rage after the relationship ended. During the first day of trial on 17 Oct., Conolly’s lawyer, Oliver Grimwood, told the court that while she did assault the men her actions were in self-defence.

A spokesperson for the Miss Universe Cayman Islands Committee told the Cayman Compass that a decision on Conolly’s future as the reigning queen will be issued in the coming days.
