Three Honduran men have appeared in court after being arrested following the seizure of five kilos of cocaine on board a commercial fishing vessel stopped by the Cayman Islands Coast Guard last week.

According to a press release from the police issued on Thursday, the Coast Guard and the RCIPS Air Operations Unit came across the vessel near George Town during a patrol just after midnight on Friday, 11 Nov.

“The Coast Guard team had reason to stop and search the vessel, and during the search, five kilos suspected of being cocaine were discovered,” police said in the release.

The three Honduran men on board, ages 59, 42 and 39, were subsequently arrested and charged on suspicion of being concerned in the importation of cocaine.

They appeared before the court on Wednesday, 15 Nov., where they were remanded in custody, to return on Tuesday, 22 Nov.

Coast Guard Commander Robert Scotland, said in the release, “This interception is only one example of the CICG and RCIPS dedication to keeping illegal drugs from reaching our streets. It makes me extremely proud to see the level of commitment and professionalism being displayed by our officers during these types of incidents.

“The results that are being produced can reassure the public that the investment of providing the requisite training, and the proper equipment, creates positive returns for the Cayman Islands.”

  1. This type of incident happens time and time again. Consideration should be given to offering a 50% reduction in sentence to these mules in return for naming the local importers, the big guys behind this trade.
