A 41-year-old Bodden Town man remained in custody Tuesday after a clash with police over the weekend during which he was tasered and later coaxed off a roof following a standoff in George Town.
The incident unfolded around 7:45pm on Saturday, police said in a statement issued on Tuesday morning.
Officers were on foot patrol on Martin Drive, George Town, when they spotted the man whom, police said, was wanted in relation to theft offences and outstanding warrants.
The man ran from the officers, who pursued him on foot to McField Lane.
Police said the man continued to resist officers’ attempts to detain him, and he threw objects at them.
“Officers discharged a taser at the man, however, he fled once again, climbing onto the roof of a nearby building,” police said.
The Cayman Islands Fire Department attended the scene to assist the police officers in their efforts to negotiate the man’s safe descent from the roof, the RCIPS said.
“However, he continued to behave in an aggressive manner towards the officers. Eventually a member of the public was able to convince the man to come down,” police said.
He was the arrested and taken into custody.
Police said after searching the man, officers found quantities of suspected ganja and cocaine.
He was further arrested for drug offences and remained in custody as investigations continue.
Police said an officer received minor injuries during the incident. The officer attended hospital for treatment and was subsequently discharged.
