A West Bay man is in police custody after an incident on Tuesday in which he threatened a motorist with an imitation firearm and later, in an attempt to evade capture, collided with four cars, one of which was a police car.
The 33-year-old man, who had to be taken for medical treatment after the collisions, was arrested in relation to traffic and other offences following his release from hospital.
The incident started on the streets of West Bay Tuesday afternoon in the vicinity of Powell Smith Road.
Police, in a statement, said they received a report that the driver of a silver Honda Accord had brandished what appeared to be a firearm at another motorist, after the two were involved in a collision.
The driver reportedly made threats before driving off.
Police said officers spotted the man’s vehicle shortly afterwards and signalled the driver to stop.
However, the man continued “driving recklessly and at high speed,” police said.
According to the statement, officers set up traffic control points along the Esterley Tibbetts Highway in an effort to stop the vehicle, but the driver evaded them.
Police said the man continued “to drive dangerously in the process, and collided with a private vehicle and a marked service vehicle”.
Shortly afterwards, his vehicle then collided with another private vehicle in the vicinity of Snug Harbour Drive, where he came to a stop.
Police said, after that collision, the driver then attempted to escape from police on foot but was captured.
The entire scenario led to massive traffic gridlock along the Esterley Tibbetts Highway and West Bay Road Wednesday evening.
Emergency services attended the scene, police said, and the man was taken to hospital by ambulance.
He was subsequently discharged and taken into custody.
Police said the man and his vehicle was searched, and the imitation firearm was recovered.
He was further arrested in relation to the imitation firearm and remained in custody Thursday afternoon as investigations continue.
