Sailor Charlotte Webster qualified the Cayman Islands for the 2023 Pan American Games, which will take place in Santiago, Chile later this year.

The qualifying performance came through four days of racing as Cayman’s sole sailor in ILCA 6 at the US Open Sailing Series, which culminated in Clearwater, Florida on Sunday, 5 Feb.

“It’s groundbreaking for Cayman,” Webster, 18, told the Cayman Compass. “I genuinely couldn’t have done it without my coach, Juan Mazzini.”

Despite gaining a spot for Cayman at the Games, Webster hasn’t officially been selected to attend the event in Chile, but her hope is that her efforts will not be in vain.

“This has been my goal for a while,” she said. “Now it’s getting to Pan Am after securing a spot for Cayman.

“Everything I have done leading up to this should help but Pan Am is the road to the Olympics. So, hopefully I can push myself even further, if or when I am selected.”
