Judith Douglas taken into custody for rental scam

Judith Douglas has been remanded into custody for allegedly conning multiple persons out of tens of thousands of dollars in a rental scam.

Douglas, 57, of Bodden Town, faces five counts of obtaining property by deception.

She was arrested on Sunday, 5 March, following multiple complaints from people who said she collected cash deposits from them in relation to a premises on Diaz Lane in George Town.

“The woman is accused of taking deposits from persons interested in renting the property without actually offering it for rent,” said a police spokesperson, in a statement.

During a brief hearing on Wednesday, 8 March, Douglas appeared before the Summary Court via video link, from the police custody suites.

“There is no bail application for today, so we await a date for pleas,” said Douglas’ attorney Jonathon Hughes. “We have not yet received disclosure from the Crown on this matter.”

Prosecutor Kerri-Ann Gillies told Magistrate Kirsty-Ann Gunn the crown was in possession of an initial set of documents in relation to five charges, but expected more disclosure documents to be submitted by police in the coming days.

Douglas was remanded into custody and is expected to make her next court appearance on 21 March.
