A Customs and Border Control internal investigation into the disappearance of a quantity of seized jewellery from its fraud unit has concluded that “at this stage” there is no evidence to refer the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
“There is also no justification, at this stage, to suspend any officer in connection with this matter and there are no reports of any other missing items,” the CBC, in an emailed response to Cayman Compass queries, has said.
However, CBC said that the recommendations of its Professional Standards Unit, which was conducting the probe, are now with CBC Director Charles Clifford for his consideration.
The report, CBC said, is still being reviewed by Clifford.
It added that CBC’s Professional Standards Unit has, from the outset, consulted the RCIPS on the investigation.
Jewels part of ongoing investigation
The missing jewellery had formed part of the evidence seized from a passenger last year.
The items, the value of which was not released, went missing at Cayman’s Customs and Border Control, leading to an internal investigation into the disappearance.
CBC, in its emailed statement, had confirmed that the quantity of jewellery was seized during the course of an investigation by its fraud section which involved an attempt by a passenger to evade import duty last year.
The fraud section has since been disbanded.
However, CBC had previously said the unit’s disbandment was not connected to the probe, but it “was simply part of CBC’s phased restructuring which consolidated all investigations under a single CBC Investigations Section”.
