The Cayman Islands National Weather Service says residents can expect overcast skies and moderate-to-heavy, isolated showers into the weekend as a cold front passes through the Cayman area.
“We expect showers [Thursday] morning followed by a break in the day and then heavier showers into the night,” said forecaster Avalon Porter. “These showers will be accompanied by a shift in winds out of the east-northeast at about 20 to 25 knots by day, dropping to 15 to 20 knots by night.”
With the cloudy skies and strong winds, Cayman’s temperature is expected to drop to the low 70s until Saturday, 18 March.
In its 7am forecast, the NWS advised that the cold front, which arrived in the Cayman area late Wednesday night, is expected to become stationary due to a “high pressure system building over the southeast US”.

“Satellite images show scattered to middle-level clouds over the northwest Caribbean,” it said.
In addition to the showers and winds, the NWS has also issued a small craft warning ahead of an anticipated increase in wave heights across the islands.
“Seas will be rough with wave heights of 5 to 7 feet,” Porter told the Compass, adding that the warning would remain in effect until Friday night, at which time sea levels are expected to return to normal.
“The outlook is for a decrease in wind speeds and [wave heights] from Friday night as the front dissipates and the associated high pressure system moves over the western Atlantic Ocean, [and] cloudiness and showers will linger through Saturday morning,” said Porter.
