In a bid to boost the standards of boxers, the Cayman Islands Boxing Association is looking to encourage the formation of local clubs.
CIBA president Alva Suckoo said the association’s aim is to promote inclusiveness and more internal competition.
“Another goal for this year is to change the organisation’s articles to allow us to sanction and enable other clubs to train and develop boxers under CIBA’s governance,” Suckoo said in an email to the Compass.
“This has never happened in Cayman… We should be encouraging other clubs to emerge and develop, and increase and enhance the level of competition locally.”
This will enable fighters training with different teams outside of the D. Dalmaine Boxing Gymnasium – CIBA’s headquarters – to have opportunities to compete for Cayman at regional and international events.
The most recent example of that was young prospect Alec Lopez, who trains out of the Performance Lab; he was given the green light by CIBA to represent Cayman at a Memorial Boxing Championships in the Bahamas earlier this month.
“We have the blessings of the Cayman Islands Boxing Association and its president, Mr. Alva Suckoo,” Lopez’s head coach Floyd Trumpet told the Compass.
With the Performance Lab being the sole boxing club to challenge those training in the boxing gym, Suckoo is calling for more teams to be formed, noting that it will be beneficial for all parties involved.
“If other clubs take advantage of this, we will be able to have inter-club local competitions, and this will heighten and improve the competitiveness of our boxers,” he said. “This will pave the way for [our] local national championships as well.”
