Local non-profit The Island House is opening the doors for its first Easter camp which is aimed at engendering a love for Caymanian heritage, sustainability and the outdoors.
Called ‘Cayman Camp’, the new Easter holiday offering, is set to begin next Tuesday at the charity’s four acre garden farm on Buddy’s Way in Savannah.
Camp leader Emily DeCou said the inaugural youth programme is aimed at children aged 11-17 and will run from 11-14 April.
Participants will learn about Cayman, sustainability and hear from guest speakers, she said.
“Cayman Camp will feature creative and educational activities centered around heritage, sustainability, and wellness, and teach campers about local ecosystems, culture, and yesteryear industries within nature. Proceeds from Cayman Camp support The Island House non-profit organization, which is developing a youth mentorship program for under-resourced Caymanian children that will be launched in September 2023,” she said via an email.
The Island House was incorporated in 2021, she said.
“It was developed with a vision to launch a youth mentorship program that fulfills its mission of inspiring and promoting long-term success in young Caymanians on its resourceful 4-acre farm-garden site,” she added.
Cayman Camp, she said, is also about teaching young people to embrace the outdoors.
Proceeds from Cayman Camp, and other events and programmes that will be held within The Island House’s garden-farm, she added, will support the youth mentorship programme.
Throughout the year, she said, The Island House hosts garden-farm programmes and events “to support its mission to brighten youth futures in the community”.
