Caymanian track-and-field athletes Louis Gordon and Shalysa Wray turned in gold-medal- winning performances during their respective university meets over the weekend.
Gordon, 22, competed at the 2023 America East Outdoor Championships, held from 6-7 May, where he won the long jump with a 7.73-metre effort. He also claimed bronze in the high jump after leaping 2.02m.
“I didn’t have the finest series, while dealing with some minor injuries,” Gordon told the Cayman Compass. “Training consistently has been a small issue that was reflected in my jumps, but thankfully, I was able to get it together and pull out a season’s best.”
Gordon noted that his plans for the remainder of the season are to attend the CAC Games in San Salvador (19 June-8 July), Island Games in Guernsey (8-14 July) and the World Athletics Championships in Budapest (19-27 Aug.).
Wray, 24, also has her sights set on upcoming competitions, which include the Big 12 Outdoor Championships being held in Oklahoma from 12-14 May.
The Kansas State junior just competed at her school’s Ward Haylett Invitational, held at the R.V. Christian Track on 6 May – her birthday.
She ran the women’s 200m dash, where she took first in a new personal best time of 23.33 seconds. She wrote on her social media page that it was “such a great birthday gift”.
