George Town man arrested on gun and traffic charges

A George Town man who fled from police, only to crash into a wall several miles away, has been charged with a string of illegal weapons possession and traffic offences.

Police said they received a tip from a member of the public that the man, age 30, was driving around with a gun. Police said they eventually located the suspect in Central George Town and signalled for him to stop and that’s when the pursuit began.

“Officers located the vehicle the man was driving and used sirens and lights to signal him to stop, however, he refused to comply with the officer’s instructions,” said police.

“He continued driving and subsequently collided with the wall of a store on North Church Street.”

Police have not released the suspect’s identity. They did say he was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, causing fear or provocation of violence, possession of Ganja, dangerous driving, and failing to stop.

Police say the man was treated for minor “non-life threatening injuries”. He remains in custody and is expected to make his initial court appearance on Tuesday 16 May.
