Regional exam board investigates maths paper leak

A regional exam board has launched an investigation into concerns that a maths exam sat by students across the Caribbean may have been leaked before it was sat.

The Department of Education Services said on Thursday it awaits the outcome of the probe by the Caribbean Examinations Council into allegations the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate maths paper was “breached in some Caribbean countries”.

“While at this point there is no report that there was a breach here in the Cayman Islands, we are deeply concerned about these allegations and their implications for students who sat the mathematics exam,” DES Director Mark Ray said in a statement.

Photographs of the CSEC exam, maths paper 2, which students took on Wednesday, are said to have been shared on social media and seen by students in St. Vincent and the Grenadines ahead of the exam, according to local media reports.

The CXC, on Thursday, acknowledged the leak was “of great concern” and confirmed an investigation had been launched.

“[We] will make a definitive statement once the investigation is completed. In the meantime, candidates can rest assured that this matter is being treated with the highest urgency,” a statement from the exam board said.

Cayman’s DES Director Mark Ray added the department would be “closely monitoring the situation”.

“[W]e will update the relevant candidates as soon as a decision is made on the way forward by CXC,” he said.
