The Cayman Islands Golf Association will host the 35th annual Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championship next month, where eight countries, including Cayman, will tee-off at the North Sound Golf Club for bragging rights and gold.
The tournament, which features three categories (13 and under, 15U and 18U), is scheduled to take place from July 3-8. A total of 91 golfers have been confirmed for the tournament, 19 of whom will be defending their home grounds.
“This is where a lot of the golfers get their start,” Helen De Quintal, CIGA member told the Compass. “This just gives them excellent tournament experience. If they go through this process, with Aaron [Jarvis] and how well he did, this is where he started, essentially.”
During last year’s Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championship in Puerto Rico, Cayman picked up two podium places – Danny Lyne, who took first for the boys 15U age group, and Holly McLean, who placed third in the U18.
De Quintal said the Cayman golfers are preparing for more podium places at this year’s tournament.
“They’ve been training really hard,” she said. “Tim Dwyer has got them training twice a week for quite a few hours; on Saturday and Mondays as well,” noting that several other players have been prepping overseas.
Outside of the junior golfers flying into Cayman, more than 100 supporters will also be joining – boosting tourism for that week, according to De Quintal.
The opening ceremony for the championship is scheduled to take place at the Marriott on 4 July, with competition commencing the following day at 8am.
