A bid to revitalise the former Calico Jack’s bar appears to be under way, with Dart submitting a planning notice to build a kitchen and restrooms at the venue, which closed down during the COVID crisis.
The popular beachside bar shut down in April 2020, after 15 years, while the island was in lockdown.
The site was owned by Dart and the building was on a lease that was due to run out at the end of 2020.
Dart’s Shoreline Development Company last year applied to the Central Planning Authority to modify the bar’s existing building façade and parking layout, and add a new restroom building. In that planning application, the company said it intended to restore “a signature destination beach bar and restaurant to fill a gap felt by both locals and visitors”.
As the plan layout submitted by Dart did not meet the minimum coastal setbacks, the planning board adjourned the application to allow Dart to submit a revised site plan that conformed with building regulation requirements.
Now the company has submitted a new planning notice with revised drawings for the kitchen and bathroom.
In response to a request for comment, a Dart spokesperson said further information would be forthcoming at a later date.
In May last year, Ken Hydes, vice president of special projects and partnerships at Dart, told the Compass that the company planned to keep the type of ‘toes in the sand’ vibe at Calico Jack’s, but may not be retaining the name.
The site plans, which include a 1,058-square-foot detached kitchen and a 636-square-foot restroom block, can be viewed on the Planning Department’s website until 23 June.
