The Accident and Emergency service at the Cayman Islands Hospital will temporarily relocate over the weekend as it continues to undergo renovations.
From Friday, 16 June, at 6pm, until Tuesday morning, 20 June, access to A&E will be via the main hospital atrium entrance.
The Health Services Authority said signage and security will be in place for directions.
It added that patients should also expect some disruptions to service, including longer wait times because of reduced bed capacity.
“As the planned multi-phased project to expand the department continues, the HSA would like to remind the community of the importance of utilizing A&E only in a true emergency,” the health authority said in a statement Friday.
It said all A&E departments use the priority triage system, where the most seriously ill patients are seen first.
It listed reasons for patients to attend A&E as:
- Loss of consciousness
- Persistent, severe chest pain
- Breathing difficulties
- Severe bleeding
- Severe allergic reactions
- Severe burns or scalds
- Acute confused state and fits that are not stopping
The A&E unit will remain open 24 hours a day.
The HSA urged anyone in a non-emergency medical situation to visit its walk-in Urgent Care Clinic instead.
The Urgent Care Clinic, which is usually located at the atrium entrance of the hospital, will temporarily relocate on Saturday, 17 June, to the General Practice Clinic at the Smith Road Medical Centre. Its opening hours on Saturday will remain as usual, 8:30am-1pm, with no appointments necessary.
The clinic will not be open on Sunday or Monday, but will return to its usual location at the hospital on Tuesday morning.
“Persons with non-emergency needs, such as flu, earache, mild sprains, cuts and colds may visit the walk-in clinic,” the HSA said.
