Police are investigating what they described as a “serious sexual assault” of an inmate at Northward Prison allegedly committed by a fellow prisoner on Monday afternoon.
In a brief statement Wednesday night, police said the offending inmate, aged 46, has been arrested in relation to the incident and will remain in the custody of the prison service.
The RCIPS said special measures have been taken to safeguard the victim.
According to police, the assault was reported just after 12:45pm on Monday, 27 June.
The incident is being investigated by the RCIPS Criminal Investigations Unit.
