A Cayman fast-food chain has been fined $125,325 for hiring staff without the correct work permits.

Workforce Opportunities and Residency Cayman carried out an investigation with the Department of Labour and Pensions, according to a press release issued 6 July.

Together they found 14 counts of employing persons outside the terms of their permits and one count of making a false representation to WORC.

The Ministry of Labour, which is responsible for WORC, would not release the name of the chain to the Compass, saying it is not the department’s policy to identify any company associated with administrative fines.

Mervin Manderson, WORC deputy director of compliance, encouraged employers to ensure their staff have valid work permits and that their duties match the approved occupation.

“We prefer to have compliant employers rather than having to levy such penalties on our local businesses,” he said.

“However, we will meet our obligations to bring justice to those who breach our immigration rules.”

Manderson said the lead officer on the case carried out the investigation in a “very efficient and professional manner”.

“I am proud of the officer and all team members who assisted,” he said, and also thanked the Department of Labour and Pensions team which played a “pivotal role”.
