A Bodden Town woman who smuggled drugs and cellphones into Northward Prison has been released on bail by the Summary Court in the hopes of giving her a second chance.
Appearing via video link on Thursday, 6 July, from Fairbanks Prison, Nahomy Nicole Bonilla Zelaya listened as Chief Magistrate Valdis Foldats set out strict bail conditions for her release.
“There will be a residency condition, a curfew, and you will have to wear an electronic monitor,” said Foldats.
Bonilla Zelaya, 20, faces two charges of smuggling, and one charge each of possession of ganja, possession of ecstasy and possession of a drug utensil. She entered guilty pleas to all the charges on a previous occasion.
The details around her unsuccessful attempt to smuggle the contraband into the prison were not read out in open court.
“These are very serious charges, and although I am releasing you out of custody, there is a chance that at the time of sentencing, you could be returned to jail,” said Foldats, as he cautioned Bonilla Zelaya.
He added, “When you are released, I hope you will consider the drug court, as this might be a way for you to have a second chance at life and not have these charges recorded on your criminal record.”
No sentencing date has been set.
Bonilla Zelaya is one of several individuals who have been detected by prison officers while attempting to smuggle contraband into Northward Prison.
Last month, Joshua Malazarte Garra, of the Philippines, was jailed for six months for attempting to smuggle two cellphones and 84.92 grams of ganja into the prison.
Last year, two former prison officers – Arnold Geovanny Cabrera Diaz and Rudolph Rambaran – were imprisoned for attempting to smuggle drugs and phones into Northward. Both men were detected on separate occasions and were not thought to be working together.
