Second prison officer admits to smuggling ganja into jail

Former prison officer Arnold Geovanny Cabrera Diaz has admitted to smuggling more than half a pound of ganja disguised in packages into Northward Prison.

Appearing before the Summary Court on Tuesday, 5 July, Cabrera Diaz entered guilty pleas to two counts of smuggling contraband and one count of breach of trust by a public officer.

The first charge of smuggling contraband dates back to 15 July 2021, when Cabrera Diaz was intercepted trying to smuggle six packages of ganja into the prison by concealing the drugs in his shoes. The combined weight of the ganja was 7.46 ounces.

The second charge refers to a time on or before 26 June 2021, when he again smuggled two packages of ganja into the prison. The weight of those packages is unknown.

Cabrera Diaz, 41, of Bodden Town, also faces two counts of possession of ganja, and two counts of possession of ganja with intent to supply. However, these charges were not put to him during his court appearance on Tuesday.

“There are discussions that are still ongoing between myself and the prosecution in relation to those charges,” said Cabrera Diaz’s attorney Amelia Fosuhene. “In light of these guilty pleas, a review is to be done but, due to the nature of the charges, I have been told that more than one person will review the file before a decision is made.”

Cabrera Diaz was released on bail and is expected to return to court on 2 Aug. to hear the prosecution’s decision on the remaining charges.

His guilty pleas are the second set of such admissions to have been made by officers from Her Majesty’s Cayman Islands Prison Service.

Former prison officer Rudolph Rambaran is currently awaiting sentencing for smuggling ganja into Northward Prison, also in June 2021.
