A single charge of murder against Bryan Welcome has been sent to the Grand Court, where he must appear next week.
“This defendant was charged overnight with one count of murder; that being a category A matter, it must be transmitted to the Grand Court,” said Scott Wainwright, assistant deputy director of public prosecutions.
The deceased, who the prosecution has identified as Omar Ryan of Clarendon, Jamaica, was resident in Cayman.
The circumstances of the death were not read out in open court; however, a statement from the RCIPS noted that prior to the killing both men had been engaged in a verbal dispute that became physical and “the victim appears to have been struck by a car”.
Welcome, 41, of George Town, who was the driver, was taken into custody within a hour of the incident.
“The prosecution is in a position to serve the preliminary disclosure which includes the summary of facts, video of the incident which was captured on CCTV footage, and initial interviews,” Wainwright said at the Summary Court hearing on Tuesday.
No bail application was made. Welcome was remanded into custody and will return for his first Grand Court appearance on Friday, 21 July.
