Cayman’s netball team drew its campaign at the 2023 CAC Games in El Salvador to a close with a 51-33 win over the Dominican Republic on 7 July.
Despite losses to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Jamaica, Bermuda, and Trinidad and Tobago in their opening matches, the team of 11 young women coached by Lyneth Monteith bounced back to win their final day match-up against the Dominican Republic and finish as the fifth-place team in the overall rankings.
According to the official results website for the CAC Games, Cayman’s Rose Wilson notched 40 goals on 77% shooting against the Dominican Republic, with Kathryn Corkish putting up Cayman’s other 11 points.
Wilson and Corkish also chipped in with three and two goal assists, respectively, while Shanti Singh led the way in assists for Cayman in that game with nine.
Brown’s silver medal highlight of Games
In the six sports with Cayman Islands representation across the two weeks of competition in El Salvador, the islands’ highest placing came courtesy of Rasheem Brown’s silver medal in the 110m hurdles on 5 July.
Cayman sporting history was also made in and on the water at the Games: swimmer Kyra Rabess set a national record in the 1500m freestyle, while sailor Charlotte Webster’s fourth-place finish in the ILCA6 class was a best-ever performance by a Cayman sailor at a major multi-sport event.
For a full run-down of those results and the rest of Cayman’s performances in beach volleyball, rugby 7s, swimming and sailing, check out last week’s recap here.
