Cayman Airways is set to announce a new international route at a press briefing on Monday.

The airline along with tourism officials have remained tightlipped about the route – the third new one to be introduced in less than a year, after Los Angeles in November 2022 and Panama last month.

However, Tourism Minister Kenneth Bryan, appearing on Radio Cayman’s ‘For the Record’ show on Friday morning, hinted that the new destination would be east of the Cayman Islands.

He said he could not reveal any more details of the route until Monday, other than to give a “teaser” that, with this new flight, all points of the compass will be covered by CAL routes, since LAX is west, Panama is south, and the airline flies north to various US airports regularly.

He said a government minister from the country Cayman Airways will be flying to will be at the press briefing on Monday for the announcement.

Cayman Airways CEO Fabian Whorms will also attend the briefing.

Earlier this year, Whorms, speaking on the Cayman Compass Facebook talkshow ‘The Resh Hour’, said the airline was looking into two new gateways for travellers, one of which he stated was likely to start this winter.

“We have some capacity in our schedule to take on, certainly this year, another gateway,” Whorms said at the time. “So we’re targeting a gateway for the winter season.”

Cayman Airways has four 737-8 planes in its fleet, which it is using on its new international routes. Each of these planes has a capacity of 160 passengers.

Currently, the airline flies to five destinations in the US – Miami, Tampa, Denver, Los Angeles and New York; two in Jamaica – Kingston and Montego Bay; as well as to Havana, Cuba; Le Ceiba, Honduras; and Panama City, Panama.

Check back on Monday for the latest on the announcement on the new route.
