Police are calling on the public to pay close attention when exchanging cash, especially large denominations of US currency, after two men were arrested for forged notes this week.
The men, 33 of West Bay and 34 of North Side, were held in separate incidents during a police investigation into forged US$100 bills.
“Pay close attention when exchanging cash to ensure that the bills you are receiving are authentic, especially when handling large denomination of US dollar bills at this time,” police advised in a statement Friday evening.
The first arrest followed an incident on Wednesday when police said officers visited public beach due to “possible illegal activities” being carried out at the location.
Police said officers stopped and searched the West Bay man whom they said appeared to fit the description of the individual believed to be carrying out illegal activities.
“During the search several US$100 forged notes were located and the man, age 33, of West Bay, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possession of forged notes,” police said.
Following that arrest, police carried out two searche warrants at addresses believed to have been connected to the arrested man.
More US$100 forged notes were recovered at one of the residences and another man, aged 34, of North Side, was also arrested in relation to the bills.
Both men have since been bailed as investigations continue.
When dealing with US currency, people are advised to compare suspicious notes to genuine ones and to check for security features, including red/blue security fibers, security threads, color-shifting ink and a portrait watermark.
Police are asking anyone with information regarding the production or existence of forged notes to call George Town Police Station at 949-4222.
