A 55-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson following Monday’s fire at the North Side Police Station.

Police, in a statement issued Thursday afternoon, said the North Side man, who was detained yesterday, remains in custody pending investigations.

His arrest follows a probe into the early-morning blaze which police had described as “deliberate.”

The fire resulted in major damage to the premises and, as a result, the North Side Police Station is not currently operational.

The incident occurred shortly before 2am on Monday.

Officers from the Cayman Islands Fire Service responded to the report of the fire and extinguished the blaze.

The station, though operational at the time of the fire, was not occupied and no one was inside the building when the blaze started.

Police said no injuries were reported.

In the absence of the North Side Police Station being operational, the RCIPS said, calls for service to that station are being forwarded to the one in Bodden Town.

“Officers will continue to respond to calls for service and conduct all other policing duties in North Side as usual, and will operate from the East End Police Station until an alternative location is identified,” police added.

Officers have continued their appeal for anyone with information which can assist in the investigation to contact the Bodden Town Police Station at 947-2220.
