Decision-makers from across the Caribbean will be taking part in the 7th Caribbean Infrastructure Forum (CARIF) in Miami next month, which will explore the critical role investment in infrastructure plays in stimulating economic growth, accelerating decarbonisation, and building resilience across the region.

The conference, which is co-sponsored by KPMG, will be held on 18 and 19 Sept.

Organisers say CARIF 2023 will present and explore “a multi-sectoral view of the opportunities to invest in and develop resilient and sustainable infrastructure” and ask what are the infrastructure priorities of island governments and are they being effectively implemented?

“We’ll address the tough questions about regulation, financing and collaboration. Are governments and regulators creating an enabling environment for sustainable growth? Are multilateral organizations and development banks doing enough to support the market? And who is tendering, bidding, investing, financing and building the next generation of infrastructure across the Caribbean?” the conference website states.

Sam Story, head of infrastructure at KPMG in the Cayman Islands, said the company was delighted to be co-title sponsor this year.

He noted that the theme for CARIF 2023 is infrastructure as an enabler for sustainable growth across the Caribbean, and said the agenda would include:

• Incentivising the flow of private finance to sustainable and resilient infrastructure projects along with building project pipelines;
• Meeting the evolving infrastructure needs of the cruise tourism and shipping industries;
• Understanding how waste-to-energy can address the Caribbean’s waste-management challenges and how to build grid infrastructure for the future of the Caribbean power sector; and
• Developing urban infrastructure to increase resilience, revitalise cities, and meet the need for affordable housing.

This year’s forum will include opportunities for attendees to network and participate in topical roundtables and attend two additional workshops focusing on sustainable finance, which will explore sources, structures and innovations that could supercharge the delivery of Caribbean infrastructure; and creating and implementing effective national development strategies.

“KPMG has a long-standing dedication to supporting island governments in enhancing their infrastructure for both the present and future. We are thrilled to host workshops which will consider, in detail, the important topics of sustainable finance and national development strategies”, Story said in a press release.

“To add a global perspective and bring recommendations and key learnings from a best-in-class lens, we are bringing our international experts to act as speakers and facilitators throughout the event, including our Global Head of Infrastructure, Stephen Beatty; our Asia-Pacific Head of Infrastructure from Singapore, Sharad Somani; and our Global Head of Healthcare, Dr Anna van Poucke,” he added.
