The Port Authority confirmed Tuesday afternoon that the port in George Town was struck by lightning, causing a small fire in a panel box that resulted in power to the Guard House being lost.

The police and Fire Service officers responded to the scene and the fire was “quickly contained”, the Port Authority said in a statement.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire or lightning strike.

“The Port Authority would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the Fire Service for their quick response to this incident. We are working diligently to assess any necessary repairs to the electrical transformer and ensure the facility is fully operational as soon as possible,” Port Authority Director Paul Hurlston said.

Cayman has been experiencing lightning and thunderstorms over the past few days due to an upper level pressure gradient in the area. Stormy weather is expected to continue over the next several days, according to the Cayman Islands National Weather Service.
