A Prospect Primary School staff member has been removed from duty following alleged misconduct towards a student, the Department of Education Services has said.

Though details on the incident were not provided, the DES, in a press release issued late Monday afternoon, said it was informed of the alleged case of misconduct by a staff member and “promptly referred the matter to the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) for investigation”.

The MASH team comprises professionals from the Department of Children and Family Services, and the Family Support Unit of the RCIPS.

The RCIPS, in a short statement to the Cayman Compass Tuesday morning, said shortly before 10am on Monday police received a report of common assault which was said to have taken place on Friday, 1 Sept. at the primary school.

The age of the student involved was not released.

The matter is under investigation, the RCIPS added.

DES Acting Director Elroy Bryan, the statement said, advised that the member of staff implicated in the alleged incident has been removed from the school pending the outcome of “appropriate investigations to ensure the welfare of the students at the school.”

“We will continue to prioritise the welfare of students and maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards any misconduct. Our educators are responsible for nurturing and educating our children, and we expect them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and care,” Bryan said in the release.

He added that the DES recognises and appreciates the concerns of parents, guardians, and the community, saying that the department also shares “their dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of our students”.

According to the DES, reporting to MASH is the established protocol for addressing child protection allegations involving staff.
