The Health Services Authority’s Accident and Emergency Unit at the Cayman Islands Hospital will temporarily relocate this weekend as it undergoes renovations.

From 6pm on Friday, 8 Sept. until Monday morning, 11 Sept., patients requiring emergency care are being asked to access A&E using the main hospital atrium entrance.

The HSA said signage and security will be in place for directions.

It added that patients should also expect some disruptions to service, including longer wait times, because of reduced bed capacity.

“As the planned multi-phased project to expand the department continues, the HSA would like to remind the community of the importance of utilizing A&E only in a true emergency,” it said.

The Urgent Care Clinic will also temporarily relocate on Saturday to the General Practice Clinic at the Smith Road Medical Centre on 150 Smith Road. Its opening hours will remain 8:30am to 1pm, with no appointments necessary.

Individuals with non-emergency needs, such as flu, earache, mild sprains, cuts and colds, may visit the walk-in clinic.

Triage arrangements

Like all A&E departments, the HSA uses a priority ‘triage’ system where the most seriously ill patients are seen first.

It advised that the among the reasons to visit A&E are:

• Loss of consciousness
• Persistent, severe chest pain
• Breathing difficulties
• Severe bleeding
• Severe allergic reactions
• Severe burns or scalds
• Acute confused state and fits that are not stopping

The A&E will remain open 24 hours a day without interruption to ensure the continuity of patient care, the HSA stated.
