Local and regional forecasters continue to warn that Hurricane Lee, which is now a major Category 3 storm, is likely to strengthen to Category 5 within the next few days as it continues on a path just north of the Leeward Islands.

This storm poses no immediate threat to the Cayman Islands.

As of 5pm on Thursday, 7 Sept., Hurricane Lee was on a northwesterly path travelling at 15 miles per hour with maximum sustained wind speeds of 130mph.

“Lee has become a major hurricane, and further strengthening is expected, with its core moving north of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico this weekend and early next week,” advised the US-based National Hurricane Center.

At present, Lee isn’t expected to make direct landfall on any country. However, forecasters are warning of potentially dangerous and life-threatening rip currents in and around the northern Leeward Islands by tomorrow, and the US east coast by Sunday.

Further east off the Cabo Verde Islands, Tropical Storm Margot, the 14th named storm of the season, has formed.

This storm also poses no immediate threat to the Cayman Islands.

Forecasters at the NHC say Margot is expected to become a hurricane around 5pm on Sunday, 10 Sept., as it continues on a north-northwest trajectory.

Further north, a third system continues to churn in the Atlantic Ocean.

Unlike the previous two systems, which are travelling in a northerly direction, the third system is predicted to move southeast.
