Police have opened an assault causing actual bodily harm investigation into Wednesday’s attack on a John Gray High School student.
Two male JGHS students who were arrested following the incident have since been bailed as police investigate, according to an RCIPS press release issued Thursday afternoon.
The incident with the students occurred around 8:30am Wednesday.
A video of the attack has circulated on social media.
In the footage, a boy is seen being ambushed by two others at the school’s gym locker room. The assailants were seen punching the victim and then kicking him in the head when he fell down, as other students watched and jeered.
The Department of Education Services issued a statement condemning the assault as director Mark Ray said the school staff acted quickly to ensure the victim received medical attention.
Police said officers responded to the report of an assault that occurred at the high school gymnasium.
The injured student was given medical attention at the school, then taken to hospital for treatment and subsequently discharged.
The two juvenile males were arrested on suspicion of assault causing actual bodily harm.
In addition to the police investigation, the school decided to “temporarily exclude” the two students, which Ray said was in the interest of maintaining a safe and nurturing learning environment for all children.
All schools in Cayman are mandated to have anti-bullying policies, following changes to the Education Act last year.
The Ministry of Education is currently carrying out a public awareness campaign on the policy, the first phase of which is running from 21 Aug. to 14 Oct.
The campaign features video, audio and social media messaging targeting children, parents and educators.
