Attorney general represents Cayman in global conference

Attorney General Samuel Bulgin has represented the Cayman Islands at an annual conference in Montserrat.

The event, held last month, was aimed at attorneys general from the United Kingdom’s overseas territories and Crown dependencies.

It covered a wide range of issues of common interest such as constitutional and maritime matters as well as recognition of same sex partnerships, according to a press release.

Other topics included child safeguarding legislation, irregular migration, key legislative matters and issues surrounding criminal justice and law enforcement.

Bulgin said the conference provided an excellent opportunity for attorneys general and other law officers to discuss matters of mutual interest and to share best practices.

“It also serves  to remind us that the overseas territories and Crown dependencies do have similar challenges and issues on which we are required to provide timely and quality legal advice and representations to our various public sector clients,” he said.

Co-chairs for the conference were the UK’s Solicitor General Michael Tomlinson and Attorney General of Montserrat Sheree Jemmotte-Rodney.

Attendees comprised attorneys general and other law officers from Montserrat, Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands, Anguilla, Falkland Islands, Guernsey, Jersey, South Georgia and South Pacific overseas territories.

Also in attendance was a representative from the US Department of Justice, and legal advisors and officers from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Representatives of the UK Home Office as well as law officers from the Isle of Man also joined the meeting online.
