To celebrate the 14 years since their inauguration, the Cayman Islands Folk Singers are putting on a special two-night anniversary performance entitled ‘Under the Breadfruit Tree’ at the Harquail Theatre this weekend, 28 and 29 Oct.

The special concert will celebrate their mission to “preserve Cayman’s musical traditions and to introduce authentic Caymanian folk songs and dance to new generations”, according to a Cayman National Cultural Foundation press release.

The ‘Run of Show’, which is described as “a journey from Cayman to the region and back again”, includes the group’s repertoire of Caymanian favourites such as ‘Munzie’s Boat’, ‘Chip Up Potato’ and the songs of ‘Aunt’ Julia Hydes, as well as popular folk songs from neighbouring islands.

The singers will be accompanied by Randy Chollette on the traditional Cayman drum and the Folk Singers’ musical director Noel Williams on the piano, along with several guest performers.

The two-night concert kicks off a busy festival season for the Folk Singers, who recently returned from performances in Cayman Brac and London, UK.
