Shomari Scott reappointed Education Council chair

Shomari Scott has been reappointed as chair of the Education Council.

Cabinet announced his reappointment through a government notice published on 23 Oct.

Scott, who replaced Dan Scott as head of the council in 2021, will serve in the substantive post until 23 Aug. 2024, according to the gazetted notice.

Shomari Scott is the chief business officer for Health City Cayman Islands.

Prior to assuming that role he was the director of tourism at the Department of Tourism and had worked in the DoT for 18 years.

Also joining Scott on the council until 23 Aug. 2024 are Bernice Scott, Cindy Scotland and Jonathon Tibbetts.

Council members Herbert Crawford, Margaret Allison Greaves, Brady-Ann Wilmot, Claudette Lazzari, Stephen Tatum, Darrel Rankine, Gilbert McLean, Latoya Francis and LeSanneo Mclaughlin, who is the council secretary, have all been appointed until 23 Aug. 2025.

Under its remit, the council advises the government on matters relating to education. It is also responsible for registering educational institutions and teachers in schools, early childhood care and education centres, as well as regulating the teaching profession in accordance with standards set by the Ministry of Education.

Dan Scott, managing director of EY, took up the role of council chair after an amendment was made to the Education Act in 2016, which stipulated that the council would be led by a professional from the private sector rather than by the minister of education.

He served as chair from 2017 to 2021.
