Student Phoenix Singh shares his love of Cayman through YouTube

First Baptist student Phoenix Singh has been using his passion for patriotism and the power of social media to share his love for the Cayman Islands.

The budding YouTuber has launched his own channel – the Phoenix Zone – and at just 11-years-old, has already interviewed Cayman Islands Governor Jane Owen and the team at the Department of Environment on his platform.

Singh, a Grade 6 student, said he always wanted to do something to showcase his talent as a musician and his homeland.

“I was deciding from lots of cool ideas. I love to play guitar; I love to do sports; so I tried to think of what I wanted to do as a kid, or as an adult in the future, and just thought being a YouTuber would also be a really good idea,” he said.

With the help of his father, Raymond Singh, who works at Radio Cayman, he started the Phoenix Zone this year, and it has evolved into a channel highlighting Cayman.

“We cover all things Cayman. We cover all the different events. We cover all the different businesses. It’s a very exciting learning experience,” Singh said.

He said he wants his channel to be a medium to teach about the Cayman Islands and attract more tourists.

“I thought it was really cool for a kid to be promoting the Cayman Islands and the different businesses, and I also thought it would be cool to be teaching the other kids around the world,” he said.

Singh said he and his father work on the videos for the channel, which has also been a special bonding experience.

Singh said he would like to see the channel grow, and while it is still early days, he wants to focus on creating “more meaningful content”.

“I am very excited for some of my new videos in the future and for the Grateful Artist series,” he said.

Though he has a passion for music and videography, the 11-year-old is uncertain what career path he wants to take in the future.

“It’s a bit hard to decide, because I’m a performer. I love music and I love to cook. I love to cook all things homemade like homemade mac and cheese, homemade burgers… since I’m a kid right now, I’m also interested in space. So, I don’t know if I want to be an astronaut, performer or chef,” Singh said.

The student also offered some advice to young Caymanians looking to follow their dreams.

“Whatever you want to do… anything in Cayman or if you want to travel anywhere, I would say you should keep doing whatever you love, and then don’t give up on it,” Singh said.

The student said he was grateful to his parents for their support, ideas for videos and teaching him how to edit them.

“It’s a very fun experience. A big thanks to my aunt Serena who does all the [sign language] in my videos,” he added.

Singh’s series has also hit the local airwaves. The Phoenix Zone and All Things Cayman also airs on Cayman Life TV and Logic Channel 33 every Wednesday at 7 pm.
