The Camana Bay Aquatic Club Caymanite Artistic Swimming athletes will be taking their development to the next level when they co-host a meet with the Aquatic Sports Association of Jamaica early next year.
Head coach Alissa Moberg, who has been building the sport on island over the past six years, told the Compass that, while the synchro programme has accomplished a lot, there is much more to achieve, starting with building up the younger swimmers.
“We are introducing a national feeder programme,” Moberg said. “It’s a national development team that will be working as a larger group, similar to most of the federations in the PanAm region.”
Cayman artistic swimmers have competed at several major events, including the World Championships, the Junior Pan American and the CARIFTA Games, where they won high-point honours earlier this year.
With the new initiative set to feature a larger group of athletes training at a higher level, Moberg said the focus will be on high performance, with top officials from across the globe visiting Cayman to evaluate the swimmers.
“We will have a much higher standard going into every meet by introducing that system,” Moberg said, noting that many big meets are coming in 2024 both nationally and domestic, starting in Jamaica.
She added that the meet scheduled to take place in Kingston is designed to be a learning opportunity for officials in the region, as well as a kick-off event for athletes.
“So [we’re] really focused on growth in the federations, growth in the region, and pushing everybody to the next level,” she said.
