Former Premier Wayne Panton has been injured in an accident, suffering several broken ribs, House Speaker Sir Alden McLaughlin said in Parliament Friday morning.

McLaughlin, speaking at the start of the formal opening of the House, said he had “unfortunate news” from the former premier – that he had been in an accident on Thursday.

“He has broken several ribs and certainly will not be here today and may well miss the entire meeting. We all should pray and hope for his speedy recovery,” McLaughlin said.

No further details on the accident were shared.

Pastor Headley Young, in the invocation ahead of the opening of Parliament, prayed for the former premier’s well being.

Panton, who was replaced as premier last month, has not been to Parliament since the no-confidence vote against him in the House, which ultimately failed but led to Juliana O’Connor-Connolly taking over as premier.

He missed the subsequent 23 Nov. Parliament meeting as he was travelling at the time.

Panton, who declined the post of Speaker of the House which was offered to him by O’Connor-Connolly, has been listed as an Independent member on the Opposition bench, clearly distancing himself from the United People’s Movement administration.

The Cayman Compass has reached out to the former premier and his team for a comment and an update on his condition, and is awaiting a response.
