Dr. Vinton Douglas has been appointed as the new deputy chief executive officer of the Health Services Authority and will take up the role on 1 Jan.

His responsibilities include oversight of primary healthcare, corporate services, infection control, quality and risk, patient services, medical records, IT, infrastructure and support services, according to an HSA press release.

Douglas has been on the senior management team as director of corporate services since 2019.

Prior to this, he also held consulting positions in both the accident and emergency, and hyperbaric medicine departments since joining the HSA in 2006.

In the release, Douglas said he was honoured to take on the role, particularly after a “monumental” year for the organisation.

Achievements included Joint Commission International accreditation, facility expansion and upgrades, and rebranding to coincide with HSA’s 20th anniversary, he said.

“I am looking forward to working alongside the CEO, Ms Lizzette Yearwood, and the rest of the HSA team to make our organisation the local healthcare provider of choice.”

Douglas pursued studies in medicine at St. Petersburg Medical University in Russia.

He completed a PhD in emergency medicine at the University of the West Indies and an MBA at the University of Liverpool.

He also earned three master’s degrees in medical education, healthcare leadership and sports and exercise medicine at the University of South Wales.

Yearwood said in the release, “The board and senior management team look forward to working with Dr. Douglas in his new role as deputy CEO.”

She added: “We look forward to his leadership as HSA continues our mission to provide the highest quality of healthcare and patient experience in the Cayman Islands.”
