Quaker granola bars and cereals recalled amid salmonella scare

Quaker Chewy granola bars are among the products that have been recalled.

The Quaker Oats Company has recalled some of its granola bars and cereals following a salmonella scare.

The Quaker Oats Company, through its authorised distributor in Cayman, Progressive Distributors Ltd., has issued a press release announcing the market withdrawal of the items “because they have the potential to be contaminated” with salmonella.

The recall includes all sizes of Chewy Classic and 25% less sugar Granola Bars, Chewy Dipps Granola Bars, Big Chewy Bars, Quaker Simply Granola and Quaker Granola Cereals. Some of these products may be included in Frito Lay Multi-Packs, the company noted.

To date, the company said, it had not received any reports of illnesses related to the products covered by the recall.

Quaker issued a detailed list of the specific products affected, which can be found here or at the www.quakergranolarecall.com website.

It added that the withdrawal of the products from sale only applies to the specific items listed and no other Quaker product is affected.

Quaker noted that the recalled bars and cereals were produced in the United States and distributed to Grand Cayman. “Therefore, the company informs potential consumers to check their pantries for any of the listed products and discard them,” it stated.

Salmonella can cause severe infections and, occasionally, fatal outcomes in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy individuals infected with salmonella typically experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, the release noted. It added that in rare circumstances, salmonella infection can lead to the organism entering the bloodstream and causing more serious illnesses, such as infected arteries, endocarditis, and arthritis.

Quaker Oats says consumers with any of the mentioned products can return them to the store where they purchased them, presenting their purchase receipt.
