Forecasters say a cold front looming on the horizon will likely enter the Cayman area by Thursday morning.

In its 27 Dec. morning forecast, the Cayman Islands National Weather Service said the system currently making its way down from the southern portion of North America has already begun to impact the Cayman Islands by way of increased cloud cover.

“A cold front currently over the southern U.S. is expected to move over the Gulf of Mexico by this evening with an increase in cloudiness spreading over the Cayman area by tomorrow morning,” said NWS forecaster Kerrie Forbes. “Satellite images show scattered low-level clouds spreading in and around the Cayman area.”

Although a temperature drop is expected within 24 hours, according to forecasts, the current readings are likely to stay consistent with daytime highs of 80 degrees Fahrenheit and overnight lows of 70 degrees.

The sustained outlook expects the cold front to settle over the Cayman Islands into the weekend and clear up in time for the new year.

“[The outlook] is for an increase in showers by Thursday evening as the cold front moves over the northwest Caribbean,” advised Forbes. “The cold front crosses the Cayman area overnight on Thursday with moderate northeasterly winds and seas by Friday morning.”
