A judge-alone trial will be held next month in the case of Russian-Canadian Anton Parygin, who is accused of unlawfully importing high-powered firearms into the Cayman Islands.
Before the trial goes ahead, the prosecution and defence lawyers will submit legal arguments relating to the charges on 23 Jan., Judge Cheryll Richards confirmed on Monday.
Parygin, who denies the charges, faces three counts of unlawful importation of a firearm and three counts of possession of an unlicensed firearm.
He is accused of bringing a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, a 12-gauge shotgun and a semi-automatic rifle into Cayman, via Owen Roberts International Airport on 28 Jan. last year.
Ben Tonner, KC, told Richards that he intends to argue that, under the Firearms Act, Parygin was legally entitled to bring the weapons into the Cayman Islands, as he had declared the firearms to Customs officers upon his arrival and had informed them by email before his arrival.
Tonner stated that his submission will argue that an importation licence was not required in this instance.
Richards extended Parygin’s bail and set the trial date for 6 Feb.
