A man who was intercepted by Customs and Border Control officers while attempting to bring three guns into Cayman, made his first Summary Court appearance on Tuesday, 31 Jan.

Appearing via video link, Anton Parygin, of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, listened as his attorney James Stenning explained why no real progress could be made during Tuesday’s hearing.

He told Magistrate Kirsty-Ann Gunn that they had received “significant disclosure” earlier in the day, which included supplementary information.

He added that his client had intended to make a bail application and stay with his wife “providing that the prosecution finds the address suitable”.

Neither the charges, nor information about how the guns were detected and Parygin’s subsequent arrest, were made public during the hearing.

However, CBC officials, in a statement released on Saturday, 28 Jan., confirmed that officers recovered a 9mm semi-automatic rifle, a 9mm pistol, and a 12 gauge shotgun.

Stenning requested that the matter be brought back on 2 Feb. for a bail hearing and a short-form preliminary inquiry.

The defendant was remanded into custody until then.
