The Cayman Islands Blood Bank got a boost on Saturday, 28 Jan., as 27 Indian nationals rolled up their sleeves to donate blood as part of celebrations to mark their country’s 74th Republic Day.

Abdul Hameed, organiser and member of the local Indian Cayman Community Group, said the drive, one of two that will be held this year, is a way of giving back to the community.

“Blood donations can be lifesaving and are needed during surgeries for unforeseen circumstances of blood loss… We are part of [the community] and are giving back to Cayman,” Hameed said.

The group has been holding blood-donation drives since 2020, with more than 25 donors each time, he added.

Saturday’s blood donation was held at the Health Services Authority’s Hibiscus Room where the Indian national flag was displayed.

A second drive is planned for August to celebrate Indian Independence Day, Hameed said.
