A West Bay woman has been arrested after allegedly swindling individuals in a rental scam operated through a local advertising website.

Police, on Wednesday, said they arrested the 42-year-old woman on Saturday, 13 Jan., following reports of obtaining property by deception.

The RCIPS said that it was reported that a rental ad was placed on the local advertising website stating that a residential property was for rent in the Prospect area of George Town.

Police said a prospective renter contacted the seller and payments were made to secure the property; after this was done they said were no longer able to contact the seller.

Additionally, police said the prospective renter also reported that following this, they discovered that the same property had been re-listed for rent on the same website, which led them to believe that they had been scammed.

Police, who are investigating this matter, said they believe there may be other victims of this rental scam, and are encouraging those people to report it.

“Additionally, the public is being encouraged not to exchange any moneys regarding rental properties without first verifying that it is a legitimate advertisement, through viewing and other traceable means,” the RCIPS advised.

Anyone with information regarding this and other financial scams are encouraged to call the George Town Police Station at 949-4222.
