Two public events are being held to celebrate National Heroes Day public holiday on Monday, 22 Jan. – an awards presentation and a celebration of culture.
The annual awards presentation will take place in Heroes Square, beginning at 9am, and the celebration of culture, featuring local food, craft vendors, live entertainment and fireworks, will begin at 4pm on Cardinall Avenue.
The theme of this year’s National Heroes Day is ‘Celebrating cultural artists and creatives’.
It will honour more than 80 people and groups across the following categories: Cherished Classics (Early Pioneers), Cultural Luminary (Pioneers), and Cultural Heritage Groups.
Public nominations took place in September and awardees were selected after the National Heroes Day committee conducted a detailed evaluation of the applications.
Criteria included being active within the arts community for 20 years or more, representing Cayman through crafts, and passing along skills through education.
Culture Minister Dwayne Seymour said in a statement that the day would begin “by revering our national heroes and applauding our 2024 Heroes Day honourees, then reuniting in historic George Town to enjoy Caymanian food and music is an excellent way to embrace our culture”.
“I look forward to fellowship with the community at both events,” he added.
The awards presentation will be streamed live on the Cayman Islands Government YouTube and cable television channels.

Bravo for the celebration of culture being held. This is so very important for the younger generation in today’s world of AI, computers, and outside influences. Thank you also for streaming the celebration!
