The mother of a man killed in a car crash three years ago is suing the driver of the vehicle and the commissioner of police, whose officers are said to have pursued the car as it sped away.
In a writ filed before the Grand Court on 12 Jan., attorneys for Tonilee Loretta Hutchinson, the mother of Shayne Anthony Ewart, has asked for unspecified financial compensation for “distress and inconvenience, funeral expenses and special losses including out of pocket expenses and costs” that she says arose from her son’s death.
Hutchinson’s claim alleges that Tarrick Kevin Crawford was negligent in the manner in which he drove the green Honda Accord, which was registered to her son, on the night of 16 Jan. 2021, when Crawford failed to stop after being signalled by police to pull over.
According to the writ, the police officers are said to be indirectly responsible for Ewart’s death by pursuing Crawford.

Crawford has been formerly charged with one count of causing death by dangerous driving in relation to Ewart’s death.
However, he has not entered a plea more than three years after the incident due to prolonged difficulties and delays with securing mental health reports to determine his fitness to plea.
When Crawford was last before the courts on 28 Nov., the prosecution requested a further delay to secure their own mental health report – this after the defence counsel had provided their own report stating that Crawford’s diminished mental capacity made him unfit for trial.
The adjournment was granted by Justice Cheryll Richards, who said the further delays were “deeply regrettable”.
Crawford remains on bail in this matter.
No date has been set for the civil proceedings against him and the commissioner of police
