While there were many standout performances at the Cayman Islands Aquatic Sports Association National Championships last week, only one swimmer produced two senior national records.
As the saying goes, Kaitlyn Sullivan ‘killed two birds with one stone’ after delivering a rare double in the 200-metre breaststroke, which she won while also setting two national records at the championships, held 10-13 Feb. at the Camana Bay Sports Complex pool.
Sullivan, 17, who trains under Darren Mew Seven Mile Swimmers, touched the wall at the 100m mark at 1:15.17, .69 faster than the previous national record of 1:15.82 set by Sarah Jackson at the 2017 Coconut Cup.
But, she wasn’t done breaking Jackson’s records. Sullivan continued to pace herself and went on to shatter the 200m breaststroke record by 2.23 seconds.
Sullivan clocked 2:42.59, bettering Jackson’s time of 02:44.82.
“It was a great swim and showed incredible commitment to go out fast and break two records in one race,” Mew told the Compass.
Like many of her fellow Cayman swimmers, Sullivan will be fine-tuning her performance as she looks to carry her winning momentum into the upcoming CARIFTA Swimming Championships.
