A 26-year-old man is in custody after being found on Friday afternoon with ammunitions, a gun part and drugs in his vehicle.
According to an RCIPS press release, shortly after 1pm, officers stopped the man’s car as it was travelling along Shedden Road in George Town, during what police described as a “series of operations” in the area.
During a search of the vehicle, the man, who was the only occupant, attempted to escape, but was apprehended by officers, police said.
Inside his car, police officers found several rounds of ammunition and a component from a firearm, along with a quantity of cash and suspected hard drugs.
The man, of George Town, was arrested on suspicion of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of a quantity of suspected cocaine.
Following his arrest, police searched the man’s residence in Patrick’s Island, Prospect.
The arrested man remained in custody Saturday afternoon, pending further investigations, police said.
“This operation forms part of the RCIPS’ ongoing efforts to target individuals involved in gun and gang violence in the Cayman Islands,” police said.
Commissioner of Police Kurt Walton, speaking following the 25 Feb. shooting of seven people at the Ed Bush Stadium in West Bay, had said police would be stepping up operations targetting gun violence and gang activity, with a team of officers focusing specifically on those areas of policing.
